Numerical Control (CNC) lathe machining is a high-precision automated processing method that controls the movement of parts and tools through digital information. It is widely used to produce complex, high-precision, and small-batch parts in fields such as aerospace. CNC lathes can process dozens of materials, including stainless steel, alloy steel, aluminum, copper, plastics, and more, enabling the production of complex structural parts featuring both square and circular geometries.

A CNC lathe consists of five main components: the main unit, CNC device, drive unit, auxiliary equipment, and programming accessories. The main unit includes mechanical parts such as the machine body and spindle, and is responsible for cutting and machining operations. The CNC device acts as the core of the system, storing programs and controlling operations through a combination of hardware and software. The drive unit facilitates the coordinated movement of the spindle and feed mechanisms according to CNC instructions, enabling complex contour machining. Auxiliary equipment includes supporting systems such as cooling, lubrication, and monitoring devices to ensure smooth machine operation. Programming devices are used for off-machine programming and data storage.

Components of CNC Machine Tools

• Main Unit: As the core structure of the CNC machine, it includes mechanical components such as the bed, column, spindle, and feed mechanisms. These parts perform the actual cutting operations.

• CNC Device: This is the brain of the CNC machine, comprising both hardware (e.g., printed circuit boards, CRT display, keypad, tape reader) and corresponding software. It is used to input and store part programs, perform data processing, interpolation, and execute control functions.

• Drive Unit: Serving as the actuating component, it consists of the spindle drive unit, feed drive unit, spindle motor, and feed motors. Under the command of the CNC system, it drives the spindle and feed mechanisms via electrical or electro-hydraulic servo systems, enabling operations such as positioning, straight-line, planar, and spatial curve machining when multiple axes are synchronized.

• Auxiliary Equipment: These are essential supporting components that ensure the proper functioning of the CNC machine, including cooling, chip removal, lubrication, lighting, and monitoring systems. Examples are hydraulic and pneumatic devices, chip conveyors, rotary tables, indexing heads, as well as tooling and inspection equipment.

• Programming and Other Auxiliary Equipment: These are used for off-line part programming and storage.
