What is Type II Anodizing?
Type II anodizing, also known as hard anodizing or barrier anodizing, is a specialized anodizing surface treatment process primarily applied to aluminum and aluminum alloys. The purpose of this process is to form an oxide film with high hardness and wear resistance on the metal surface, thereby enhancing the material's corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance. Compared with conventional Type I anodizing (typically used for decorative or protective coatings), Type II anodizing produces a thicker oxide layer with greater hardness.
The characteristics of Type II anodizing include:
Thick film formation: Type II anodizing can form oxide films with thicknesses ranging from 25 to 300 microns (or even thicker).
High hardness: The resulting oxide film exhibits high hardness, typically in the range of 400–600 HV (Vickers hardness).
Excellent wear resistance: Owing to the high hardness of the oxide film, surfaces treated with Type II anodizing have outstanding abrasion resistance.
Good corrosion resistance: The oxide film provides robust chemical stability, protecting the aluminum substrate from corrosion.
Good electrical insulation: The oxide film has high electrical resistivity, thus offering good insulating properties.
Colorability: Type II anodized films can be dyed in various colors through specialized coloring processes.
Weldability: Unlike certain coatings, the Type II anodized film does not impair the material's weldability.
Environmental friendliness: Anodizing is an environmentally friendly surface treatment technology that does not involve the use of hazardous chemicals.
The Type II anodizing process typically includes the following steps:
Pretreatment: Includes cleaning, degreasing, and chemical or electrochemical polishing to ensure a clean aluminum surface.
Anodizing: The aluminum material serves as the anode and is electrolyzed in a specific electrolyte (usually sulfuric acid‑based) to form the oxide film.
Sealing treatment: The anodized parts undergo sealing to improve the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of the oxide film.
Post‑treatment: May include rinsing, drying, and optional coloring or sealing processes.
Type II anodizing is widely used in aerospace, automotive, electronics, mechanical manufacturing, and other fields, and is suitable for applications requiring high wear resistance and corrosion resistance.
